It was the comic world that ruled geek news this last week as San Diego Comic Con was in full swing. Major players from all realms of nerdom gathered to share their latest updates. With such a huge event, I can’t possibly cover all the announcements, but here’s a full recap for your convenience.

Marvel Studios made a good call releasing Captain America: The First Avenger along with all the con hype. It took the box office this weekend making $65.1 million, but still shy of Thor’s $65.7 million opening weekend. And while Comic Con may have helped boost Captain America’s sales in America, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 continues to enchant the rest of the world.

Out of all the videos released at this year’s Comic Con, the trailer for The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra was one of the most anticipated (see above). The brand new video gives just over a minute’s look at the world of Avatar some 70 years after Aang.

Avatar might have been the best footage to come out of Comic Con, but that’s only because The Avengers trailer is being exclusively released with Captain America. There are some shoddy copies like this floating around out there, but Disney is doing its best to keep this one off the web. However, there were some awesome posters released at Comic Con.

Speaking of super hero movies to be released, it looks like Man of Steel is going to be pushed back to 2013. The date is dancing on a very thin line for when Warner Bros. loses the distribution rights to Superman and they return to the estates of creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

A whole lot more went down including the first looks at Judge Dredd and Ghost Rider. But beyond the confines of Comic Con other things have been happening.

In fact, word is that something is stirring in the Land of Oz, something named Sam Raimi. Press releases have announced that Raimi is commencing shooting on Oz the Great and Powerful. The cast is looking phenomenal, consisting of James Franco, Mila Kunis, and Zach Braff. This should be a nice re-entry into Oz before the rumored Wicked movie.

On one last note, this edition of Week In Geek is brought to you on the birthday of nerd legend and Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax. In honor of this, I have a bit of gaming related information: The Guild is getting its own Munchkin card expansion. It’s not D&D related, but it’ll have to do. Now go do your part to celebrate this special day and play some pen and paper games (or better yet, go spend some money at your local gaming store).
